Award-winning chef-restaurateur Tom Douglas, Pinzon, and Amazon.com introduce a line of multi-functional products that will inspire home chefs and build confidence in the kitchen. This smooth-glazed ceramic mortar and pestle, one of the oldest cook’s tools, is unrivaled for crushing whole spices and fresh herbs to extract maximum flavor. It’s ideal for making curry mix or garam masala (a blend of spices). Grind fibrous foods, such as lemongrass, ginger, and chiles, that the food processer can't break down easily. There's nothing quite like the aromatics of fresh basil and garlic when making homemade pesto, mashed together with a mortar and pestle. The heavy ceramic bowl stays steady while you crush and grind and features a ribbed interior that holds ingredients in place. It measures 5 inches in diameter and 2-7/8 inches high. The porcelain pestle has a wooden handle to provide a secure grip and measures 6-1/2 inches long. To clean, use warm soapy water or the dishwasher.

Tom's Tips

  • For maximum depth of flavor, toast your spices before pulverizing.
  • Salt helps the "grind."
  • If you normally pull out the food processor to grind ingredients, you'll appreciate having a mortar and pestle on hand for the times you just want to grind a handful of things.
