For keeping sharp blades, tools, and toys in optimal working condition, this Spyderco sharpener set is top notch. Called the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker, the unit includes two sets of high alumina ceramic stones: a pair of medium-grit (brown) stones for aggressive sharpening and a set of fine-grit (white) stones for professional-grade finishing. The stones are triangular for sharpening plain edges on the flat sides and SpyderEdges (serrations) on the corners. A furrow along the stones' length allows for awls, darts, fishhooks, and punches.
All components snap into the self-contained ABS plastic base and lid, and are ready to travel. Die-cut into the base are keyed slots and holes fitted for the stones. They accurately set the stones' sharpening angle at 30 degrees (15 degrees each side) or 40 degrees (20 degrees each side) for knives and 12-1/2 degrees for scissors. On the other side of the base is a channel for laying two stones side-by-side (flat-side up) to use as a benchstone. The lid snaps halfway over the base, creating a handhold for stability, and a set of brass safety rods is included to protect hands while sharpening.
Handle with care since ceramic stones, like glass, will break if dropped. Use them dry, without oil, water, or lubricants. To clean, scrub the stones with a plastic scouring pad and powered abrasive cleaner, then let them air dry. The set is also autoclave safe. The base is drilled for bolting to a table or countertop for permanent attachment in a shop or kitchen. A handy How-To-Use leaflet and DVD are included.
